Your First Private In-Person Pilates Session: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Starting Pilates in person can feel both exciting and a bit intimidating if you’re new to the practice. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare helps you feel confident and ready to get the most from your session. Your first session is designed to focus on your individual needs and goals. We will create a personalized plan that suits your body and fitness level, making sure you feel comfortable and supported every step of the way.


What Happens in Your First Session and What You Will Learn


Your initial Pilates session is not about mastering every move right away and not about remembering everything at once. Instead, it’s a chance to connect with your instructor, discuss your physical needs, and create a plan tailored just for you. Expect the session to include:


  • Introduction and discussion about your health, fitness background, and what you want to achieve.

  • Assessment of your posture and current movement patterns and any areas that need special attention.

  • The Method introducing you to Pilates fundamentals and principles without pressure including:

    • Basic breathing techniques that support movement and core engagement.

    • Key Pilates terms like “neutral and imprint spine” and “engage the TA,” explained simply.

    • Foundational exercises that help gain awareness of muscle engaement, build strength, flexibility, and control.

    • Modifications and progressions to suit your body’s needs.


How the Session Is Structured


A typical first session lasts about 50 minutes and follows a clear format:


  • 5 minutes before the session: Arrive early to settle in.

  • 5 to 10 minutes: Introduction and discussions about health with posture analysis and needs.

  • 35 to 40 minutes: body of the session learning the fundamentals with guided exercises and modifications, finishing with stretching to bring your body back to rest.

  • 5 minutes: Post-session questions and feedback to help shape future sessions.



What to Bring and Wear


Preparing the right clothing helps you focus on your Pilates practice without distractions. For your in-person session, all you need is Comfortable exercise clothing that allow you to move freely.


Note: Wearing fitted but flexible clothes helps the instructor see your alignment and form, which is important for safe and effective Pilates.


All other equipment that is needed for your session is provided and Water to stay hydrated.



Instructor Guidance You Can Expect


Expect clear instructions:


  • Demonstrate exercises and form where needed so you can see proper form.

  • Modifications to match your skill level and any physical limitations.

  • Correct your posture and alignment gently through cues and hands on adjustments to prevent injury.

  • Encourage you to listen to your body and move at your own pace.


This personalized attention helps you build confidence and learn Pilates safely.




Tips to Make the Most of Your First Pilates Session


  • Be honest about your fitness level and any injuries. This helps the instructor customize your plan.

  • Tell the instructor if something feels uncomfortable or painful.

  • Ask questions whenever you need clarification.

  • Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in.

  • Stay hydrated before and after the session.

  • Have a light snack approximately an hour before to maintain energy but not something heavy that will sit in the stomach.

  • Arrive 5min early.

  • Keep an open mind and focus on how your body feels, not on perfection.


Pilates is about progress, not perfection, so give yourself time to adjust.

After your initial session, you will have a clearer idea of your Pilates journey. The instructor will:


  • Provide a customized plan based on your goals and abilities.

  • Suggest exercises you can practice between sessions.

  • Schedule follow-up sessions to build on your progress.
